Now we don’t know about you (although we can rightfully assume) but we spend a significant portion of our money on makeup & skincare and when we take the time and effort to get dolled up – we don’t want it sliding off our faces & into a puddle at our feet. It’s an exaggeration sure, but not a stretch. We’re in the middle of Summer & even here in Vancouver the temps have hit the 100’s so we’ve done a little recon on how we can keep ourselves lookin (somewhat) cute and not like we just got a drink thrown into our faces.
We’re no experts – we like to remind ya’ll just so you don’t get the wrong idea (& blame us for a mishap ha ha) but we’re out there in a full face of Sephora in 96 degree weather and have lived to tell the tale so take our word for it – these tips will come in handy the next time you’re at the beach OR if you leave the house pretty much any day in the Summer and have a tendency to sweat like you’ve just ran a 5k. Ahem, Jennifer.
GO OIL FREE
If you sweat like the Devil is on your shoulder then using a daily moisturizer that’s oil free is very helpful. Why add to the greasy, sweaty feeling you’ll be experiencing because of the heat? If you wear foundation, which many of us do – opt for an oil free one as well. The point here is to stay away from extra slickness.
These are some moisturizers that you might find useful:
PRIMER – NOT JUST FOR PAINTING
Well, we’re painting our faces so yeah, it makes sense. Now you might think that adding an extra product to your makeup routine sounds unnecessary (especially in the warmer months) but using primer actually helps makeup stay put & most are so barely there that you won’t notice it. Think of it as a super stealthy secret agent who has your back but is hidden in the shadows. They have those right?
I love the Benefit primer for how smooth of a canvas it creates and the Becca primer adds the perfect amount of radiance without looking shiny:
BYE BYE LIQUID BRONZER
We all know contouring is a thing & a part of the makeup process that we might not be so keen to let go of (thanks Kardashians – only very semi sarcastically) – BUT if you tend to have oilier skin or hate how the heat messes with the masterpiece on your face then try your hand at using powdered bronzer to contour. I’ve actually been doing it this way since the get-go because it’s easier to blend and keep as natural as possible AND in this case, easier to keep from sliding around your face. Bronzer is also insanely handy for when you’ve kept your face hidden from the sun while the rest of your body has basked in it. Instant tan & it saves you from having to switch up your foundation shade. Oop.
The Marc Jacobs bronzer is one I’ve been using for years & I never stray. The Physicians Formula bronzer is excellent for creating a natural blended look with a hint of luminescence because of the variety of colors it has:
LEAVE THE DEW FOR THE GRASS
A glowy, dewy face is a whole look – we know. It’s youthful and shimmery and shiny and makes you look like you’ve descended from the stars above BUT in the Summer it can also make you look like you’ve just lost a match with a duvet cover. You know what I’m talking about. (Side note: anyone privvy to a struggle-free tip for stuffing your duvet into it’s cover because ya girl NEEDS ONE)?! Carrying on – you want to avoid creamy foundations and products like cream blush, cream contour, cream whatever. It’s nice to have an easy creamy application in the Winter but these days? Let’s not. Humidity and dewy products don’t mix easily. Just like me at a party.
Here are some oil free foundations to keep that dew at bay although if you tend to have drier skin make sure you use it with a good moisturizer/primer duo:
Oooh yes girl. Get you some of these. They’re like $2 at Sephora (or just about any other place they sell makeup). A little dab across your makeup and all that “very not cute” sweat & shine is mopped up like Cinderelly herself came and un-willingly did it. Oh, and blotting and then swiping a bit of powder across your face not only refreshes your makeup but gives you a bit of radiance.
Here are a few that are readily available:
To be honest with you all, I’m not a primer girl. I know they are raved about and set the canvas for foundation but primers don’t do anything special for me, or perhaps I haven’t come across the right one. I have sensitive, acne prone skin and primers tend to break me out and don’t have my makeup lasting any longer or doing anything that my regular old moisturizer can’t do.
I do follow a couple of steps to make sure that I am getting longevity out of my makeup, whether its winter or during a heat wave, my steps don’t change. I always use an oil free moisturizer before putting on makeup. I do not use dewy foundations (my face would melt off), so it’s usually a matte to semi-matte foundation for me. I ALWAYS set with a powder, very lightly with a big fluffy brush. I don’t like to look too powdery or flat so this is just to set my makeup and concealer. I don’t always use a setting spray, I save that for those days and nights when I’m out and about and need to keep myself looking fresh. I’ve listed some of my favorite products to get a smooth matte canvas that won’t be dripping off my face, check em out!
My favorite day moisturizer of all time! Gives me the moisture I need without making me an oil slick.
Ride or die foundation. This lasts all day and can be sheered out for a lighter look or you can keep it full coverage.
Nothing like hot summer days to help remind me why I will never give this powder up. I use this as a setting powder year round for that extra SPF protection and because it just looks so damn good and keeps my base in place. Even on the hottest days it made me feel not only protected but like I didn’t need to touch up every five minutes!
This setting spray really does lock it all in! If you want that smudge proof makeup that doesn’t immediately melt off your face, well look no further, this is the little guy that will help you with that. It does an amazing job of keeping the makeup looking intact and fresh even several hours later. This will be the perfect finishing touch to add for a beach day or for dancing the night away.
If you have any other tips & tricks for not melting our faces off we’d be overjoyed to hear em!
And remember to slather on that SPF beach babes!
